Hello from Milwaukee, WI. USA,
Behling Family History
It was written in 1880 in German. We had a German Teacher type it in English
for us: it goes as follows:
The history of the Behling family began in Province Pommern Germany many years
ago. At the time this historical record begins there were nine living brothers
whose father was Christain Gottlieb Behling and there Mother Augusta Behling.
There names of the nine brothers according to age were Frederick, William,
Martin, Johann, Christopher (August), Carl, Ludwig, Daniel, and Herman. William
was a blacksmith, Johann, August, and Carl were farmers, Ludwig was a fisherman,
and Daniel a sheered. The occupations of the others are unknown.
William, Martin, and Herman were the first to come to America. They
Arrived here in 1880. Herman was the only son who was unmarried, when they came
to this country. The others all Brought Their wives and families with them. They
came on a sailing vessel which took them fifteen weeks to make the trip.
William, Martin, and Herman went directly to Milwaukee, William only remained
there for one year and then returning to Albion where his wife and relatives
were located.
August and Fred came in 1880. They remained in Albion. Fred's son August
and wife, who had accompanied him, went directly to Milwaukee where her
relatives had settled, and later the Father joined them there. Fred arrived on a
different boat then the others as his ticket had been purchased in this country
and sent to him. They arrived here at the same time, however, after nine or ten
days in the water. At one time the two boats were so close on the ocean they
could read the names on them. These were steam vessels.
Daniel came about two years later in 1882, and Carl soon followed him in
1888.
Ludwig and John, who was the father of August Behling, remained in
Germany August Behling, John's son, later came to America with his wife.
Fred was the grandfather to Martha Viebrink, Olga Menzel, and Lena
Schwartz of Milwaukee
