My great grandfather, August RAMTHUN was born in Koldemanz,
Kreis
Greifenberg 5 Dec 1834.
His father was Carl RAMTHUN and was born in Koldemanz 1791. Carl married
Christine Friedericke Wendt, 26 Nov 1819, who was born 1800 to Christian
Friedrich Wendt and Charlotte Eleonora Drost.
Carl's father was Martin RAMTHUN and was born before the records
are written
about 1740.
Carl's brother was Friedrich Martin Ramthun b. 15 Feb 1832. Fred married
Caroline Broitzman in 7 Nov 1856, who was born in Koldemanz, 5 Mai 1833 to
Casper and Dorothea Wendt Broitzman.
In 1864 these two brothers and Freds wife and two children left
Pommern for
America. I find them in Ogle County, Illinois in 1865. Many other RAMTHUNs
from surrounding Pommern Kreis left Pommern earlier and settled in
Wisconsin. I have not yet found a link to any of these other RAMTHUN
families.
In searching the LDS files I have found clusters of RAMTHUNs usually along
an area from Stargard to Treptow.
My great grandmother who married August was Wilhelmine Lembke from
Dersekow,
Greifswald. She was born there 15 Juni 1854. Her parents were Friedrich
Lembke, born 31 Juli 1825 near Dersekow and Christine Dorothea Marie
Praekel
born Bisdorf 16 Feb 1828. Her parents were Johann Heinrich Gustaf Praekel
and Marie Dorothea Semlow. Fred's parents were Johann Lembke and Anne
Frank.
Fred and his second wife and their children came to America in 1871
or 1872.
They also came to Ogle County, Illinois.
The Germans lived in communities connected by their church and language.
They formed a German Lutheran church in this area. They worked as farm
laborers which were in great demand at the end of the Civil War. There was
also railroads to be laid and canals to be dug which also begged for
laborers from these Pomeranian Prussians. After about 10 years, they had
saved enough money to buy land in Iowa and so they went in groups to form
a
new church community in Calhoun County, Iowa. This is where the families
stayed for 2 or three generations before finding it necessary to move away
from farms into the cities and businesses throughout the country.
