MY ANCESTORS WITH POMERANIAN ROOTS ! My great grandfather Carl Fredrick Bartelt was born 31 Jan 1833 in Kankelfitz Kreis Regenwalde Pomerania. According to his death certificate his father was Fredrick Bartelt and his mother ______Bosh. When he imigrated to America in 1857 he settled in Batavia, IL According to his passport he had lived in Plantikow before he came and is listed as a shepherd . The story I have been told is that in Pommern while he watched the sheep he would knit. He would then sell the wool socks to the wealthy land owners. In America he married Caroline Schimmelpfennig in 1861and together they had 12 children. Carl Bartelt became a farmer and bought a farm in Batavia where he raised his family. Caroline Schimmelpfennig came to Batavia from very near the same area also in 1857. Caroline came with her parents (Johan Fredrich Schimmelpfennig & Anna Christine Wilhelmine Schimmelpfennig born Wilcke) and also her sister Augusta. Augusta stayed in Batavia and married Otto Krause also from the same area. Along with them was Johan Schimmelpfennig’s mother Maria Elisabeth Schimmelpfennig born Lietz who came also from Grabow Kreis Regenwalde Pomerania.
Carl Bartelt’s sister Henrietta Bartelt came also to settle in Batavia at a later date with her husband Gottlieb Raddant from the same area . I was also told the story that Carl Bartelt had a brother that left Pommern and went to South America and grew coffee on a plantation there. I now wonder if that was in Santo Angelo Colony. I would be interested in finding any of the family that was left behind in Pomerania. Thanks for your interest and help.
